For this pair, we set out to make a set of shorter hair pins, ideal both for half-updos and for those who prefer to use shorter sticks. For the focal gemstones, Tracey selected a matched pair of beautiful red Carnelians. Carnelian, the traditional birthstone of August, has been a popular gemstone for thousands of years. Its rich color led to many beliefs about its powers, ranging from Carnelian warding the wearer against evil to the gemstone being a lucky charm.
To complement the focal gemstones, Tracey selected matched Freshwater Pearls and Carnelians, and set the dangles with an elegant sterling silver Celtic knotwork bead. To finish, the design was set with all sterling silver accents and bead caps.
For the hairpins themselves, we selected a beautiful piece of Mahogany. A beautiful, rich redwood, Mahogany is as famous for its strength and density as it is for its obvious beauty, and these two characteristics make it an absolutely wonderful choice for hairpins. Rob turned both pins from a single piece of Mahogany, and they were finished with a water-resistant semi-gloss coating that makes them ideal for wet or damp bunning. The pins are matched with an effective length of three inches, and have a total length each of four and one-eighth inches.
