To celebrate the New Year, Tracey decided to design a piece using the two birthstones of January. For the focus, she selected a lovely 16mm Rose Quartz gemstone. The modern alternative birthstone for January, Rose Quartz is prized both for its color and for its spiritual qualities; it is believed to grant the wearer calmness of mind, and to enhance love. This gemstone features beautiful internal crystalline variations that we were unfortunately unable to capture with our photography.
To complement the focal gemstone, she selected Rose Quartz and rich, wine-red Garnets. The traditional birthstone for January, Garnets have have been popular for many centuries; beliefs about their powers range from reducing fever and inflammation to providing the wearer with protection from poisons and bad dreams, and their rich color is a beautiful complement for both the delicate pink of the Rose Quartz and the warm tones of the Cocobolo. To complete the design, she chose an elegant single-sided sterling silver heart charm, and set the entire design with beautiful sterling silver bead caps and accents.
For the hairstick itself, we selected a beautiful piece of banded Cocobolo. A dense hardwood originating in Central America, Cocobolo's varying color and grain often yields beautiful results, and the combination of strength and beauty makes Cocobolo a wonderful choice for hairsticks. Rob hand-turned this hairstick, which was finished with a glossy, water-resistant coating, making this piece ideal for wet or damp bunning. The effective length of the hairstick is four and three-quarter inches, and with the design set in place, the entire piece measures in with a length of six and three-quarter inches.
