Tracey's design for this piece centers around the wonderful 16mm Lapis Lazuli gemstone. An ultramarine-blue stone dusted with gold pyrites and occasional white clouds, Lapis Lazuli's popularity has been very enduring, having been used as far back as 5000 BC by the Ancient Egyptians. And like so many bright gemstones, Lapis Lazuli has also been believed to be a protective amulet, able to ward the wearer from evils and protect the mind from envy and fear.
To complement the focal gemstone, she selected oval Freshwater Pearls and Lapis Lazuli, and accented these stones with Cubic Zirconia set both in a sterling silver rondelle and a sterling silver charm. A very hard gemstone, Cubic Zirconia's appearance is almost identical to that of a high quality, crystal-clear diamond, possessing the same wonderful, prismatic fire that has made diamonds popular for so many thousands of years. To finish, the dangles were set below an elegant sterling silver chandelier, and the entire design was finished with sterling silver accents.
For the hairstick itself, we selected a single piece of Olivewood, taken from the trees in the holy city of Bethlehem, Israel. A dense and beautiful hardwood more often found in Italy and Africa, some small pieces are carefully pruned from the Olive trees of Bethlehem, and these pieces possess a beautiful grain that yields wonderful results for hairsticks. Rob hand-turned the hairstick, which was finished with a water-resistant satin coating, making this piece ideal for wet or damp bunning. The effective length of the hairstick is four and three-quarter inches, while the entire piece measures in with a length of six and three-sixteenth inches.
